CAREER HIGHLIGHTS Music Director of La Scala from 1986 to 2005, he held the positions of Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra (1980-92), of the London Philharmonia Orchestra (1972-82) and Principal Conductor of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (1968-80). In 2010 he will celebrate 40 years of artistic collaboration with the Salzburg Festival and the Vienna Philharmonic. In September he starts as Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Director of the Rome Opera House. Regular guest of the world’s most important orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony, and the Orchestre National de France, he has particularly close ties to the Vienna Philharmonic and has appeared with this orchestra at the Salzburg Festival since 1971. In 2004, he founded the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra, consisting of young musicians selected from all over Italy. “Cavaliere di Gran Croce” of the Italian Republic, he received honors from Germany, Austria, Russia, and Israel. He was awarded the Légion d’Honneur and Queen Elisabeth II made him Knight of the British Empire. Honorary Member of the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle and of the Vienna State Opera, and when he was invited to conduct the concert celebrating 150 years of the Vienna Philharmonic, he was presented with the Golden Ring, a very rarely awarded honor. www.riccardomuti.com
