The Characters
Magda (soprano): She begins as Rambaldo’s jaded mistress, but Prunier’s ballad restores her faith in love. Inspired, Magda disguises herself as a shop girl named “Paulette” to pursue her romantic dream. While acting under her alias Magda finds love in Ruggero, only to realize that she must choose between wedded bliss and telling the truth.
Lisette (soprano): A vivacious and playful young woman, Lisette is Magda’s maid and close friend. She is also Prunier’s long-time girlfriend, and the two stand in contrast to Magda and her capricious love affairs.
Ruggero (tenor): Ruggero is a young man who becomes infatuated with “Paulette.” Unaware of her past and secrets, Ruggero inadvertently creates a difficult situation in his attempt to perpetuate their idyllic rapture.
Prunier (tenor): A poet whose ballad renews Magda’s view of romantic love. He is also Lisette’s long-time boyfriend.
Rambaldo (baritone): A wealthy Parisian whom Magda has had relations with. He cares for Magda, but is annoyed by her romantic escapade, and ultimately disrupts Magda’s fantasy life.
