The Characters
Salome (soprano)–The Princess of Judea and Herodias’ daughter.
Herodias (mezzo-soprano)–Salome’s mother and Herodes’ niece.
Page (contralto)-Herodes’ page.
Herodes (tenor)–The Tetrarch of Judea and Herodias’ husband. He lusts after his stepdaughter Salome, and is afraid of Jochanaan’s prophetic power.
Narraboth (tenor)–A young Syrian, captain of the palace guard. He has fallen in love with Salome from afar.
Jochanaan (baritone)–A prophet who has been imprisoned for opposing Herodias’s marriage to Herodes.
