Act I: A hot summer afternoon in a quiet Moravian village. Jenufa waits anxiously to hear if her beloved Steva is to be drafted, for she is carrying his child. If Steva is conscripted he will be unable to marry Jenufa, and the whole village will find out about her pregnancy. Meanwhile Steva's half-brother Laca, who secretly loves Jenufa, criticizes Grandmother Buryjovka for preferring Steva. His tirade is interrupted when the shepherd boy Jano runs in to thank Jenufa for teaching him to read. Grandmother Buryjovka praises Jenufa for her intelligence. Laca teases the girl about her relationship with Steva-but later confides to the Mill Foreman that he hopes the couple never marries.

Laca:
To jste mi pokazdé pripamatovaly,
kdyzjsem se - chlapcisko siré -
za vámi prikrádal, kdyzjste mazlívaly
Stevu na klíne a hladily jeho vlasy,
ze "zluté jak slunecko!"
You never failed to remind me of it when I once
used to - as an orphan boy -
steal quietly up to you when you fondled
Steva gently on your lap and lovingly stroked his hair,
his hair "as gold as sunshine"!
