Act I: A hot summer afternoon
in a quiet Moravian village. Jenufa waits anxiously to
hear if her beloved Steva is to be drafted, for she is
carrying his child. If Steva is conscripted he will be
unable to marry Jenufa, and the whole village will find
out about her pregnancy. Meanwhile Steva's half-brother
Laca, who secretly loves Jenufa, criticizes Grandmother
Buryjovka for preferring Steva. His tirade is interrupted
when the shepherd boy Jano runs in to thank Jenufa for
teaching him to read. Grandmother Buryjovka praises Jenufa
for her intelligence. Laca teases the girl about her
relationship with Steva-but later confides to the Mill
Foreman that he hopes the couple never marries.
