Act I: Russia, 1820's. On her estate, the widowed Madame
Larina sits with her servant Filippyevna in the garden as
her daughters, Tatyana and Olga, blend voices in a love song.
The song reminds M. Larina of her youth, when she enjoyed
romantic love stories. Peasants bring fresh hay and salute
Madame Larina with folk songs. Olga praises the straightforward,
outgoing life, and she taunts Tatyana for not enjoying herself.
Tatyana, a shy girl, remains pensive and apart, wrapped in
the fantasy world of her books.
