Act I: Nighttime in the hall of the Aliaferia palace. Ferrando, a veteran guardsman, keeps his troop of Count di Luna's soldiers awake by telling the story of Gypsy woman who was burned at the stake for putting a hex on the Count's infant brother. In revenge, the Gypsy's daughter stole the child and apparently burned him in the remains of the same fire that killed her mother. Unwilling to believe his child dead, the old count charged his other son, the present Count di Luna, with finding the Gypsy's daughter.

Ferrando:
Compě quest'empia nefando eccesso!
Sparve il fanciullo, The child disappeared,
E si rinvenne mal spenta brace,
Nel sito istesso
Ov'arsa un giorno la strega venne!
This criminal committed an unspeakable act!
The child disappeared,
And they found still glowing embers,
On the very same spot
Where the witch had once been burned!
