Act I: In mythological ancient Egypt, Prince Tamino has been overtaken by a giant serpent while wandering in the wilderness. Unarmed and exhausted, he cries out for help and collapses as the monster approaches him. As if by magic, Three Ladies appear and kill the serpent. They admire the unconscious prince and argue about which of them will watch over him while the others report to their mistress, the Queen of the Night. Realizing they cannot all stay, they agree that all will leave.
