In a temple hallway, Tamino and Pamina receive further instructions: they are to remain silent and to proceed in a certain direction when they hear trumpets. When the priests have left, Papageno tries to talk to Tamino, who is approached by an old hag carrying a cup. He banters with her about her sweetheart and thinks, when she says she is eighteen, she really means "eighty". At the sound of thunder, she vanishes and the Three Genii reappear, conjuring up food and drink and giving back the flute and glockenspiel.

As for Papageno, heaven means nothing to him, and he would like nothing better than a glass of wine. When the Speaker grants this wish, Papageno-now alone-revives a little and speculates on his promised wife. At this point the old hag returns to offer herself as a bride, saying he will never escape the place if he refuses. He agrees, saying aside, "Until I find someone prettier," but just as she is transformed into a pretty young Papagena, the Speaker returns to whisk her away, declaring Papageno not yet worthy.
