Rumbles of thunder announce the Queen herself. She assures the frightened Tamino that she has come only to ask his help: she has lost her daughter to evil forces and wants Tamino to win her back. Promising Pamina's hand in marriage as reward, the Queen vanishes as abruptly as she appeared. Papageno hums in protest against his padlock, and the Ladies remove it, making him promise to stop lying. They present him with a magic glockenspiel and Tamino with a magic flute, sending the men to Sarastro's temple to rescue the captive Pamina. The magic instruments are to be used in case of danger. Three Genii will guide the way, and no one's advice but theirs should be heeded.
