Victor Callegari



Victor Callegari joined the Metropolitan Opera House as an apprentice during the 1964-1965 season. This was the last season at the old Metropolitan Opera House. The following year the Met moved to Lincoln Center. In 1975 Victor Callegari became the head of the make-up department. He has to his credit about one hundred PBS Metropolitan Opera telecasts for which he received six National Daytime Emmy Awards. During the summer months he lectures and gives opera make-up demonstrations. Internationally he has worked in Austria (Salzburg), Germany (Bayreuth), Israel, England, Belgium, Argentina (Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires), Italy, Hong Kong, Singapore, and in the Philippines. He has worked throughout the United States. In New York City, Victor Callegari has given demonstrations at the Juilliard School of Music, the Mannes School of Music, the Manhattan School of Music, as well as in the drama and music departments of Columbia and New York Universities, respectively. He is a journeyman with the Make-up Artists and Hair Stylists Local 798, also in New York City.

In addition to his work in the opera, Victor Callegari has worked for NBC, ABC, and CBS television networks. In the past he has judged the make-up artist competition at the International Beauty Competition held at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan. Over the course of his career, Victor Callegari has worked with some of opera's most legendary artists, including Renata Tebaldi, Joan Sutherland, Marilyn Horne, Leontyne Price, Mirella Freni, Renata Scotto, Renée Fleming, Dawn Upshaw, Franco Corelli, Richard Tucker, Carlo Bergonzi, Cesare Siepi, Giorgio Tozzi, Nicolai Gedda, Cornell MacNeil, Bonaldo Giaiotti, Fernando Corena, Robert Merrill, Leo Nucci, Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Neil Shicoff, Sherrill Milnes, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Justino Diaz, and Juan Pons.

Victor Callegari continues to be the head of the Make-up Department at the Met. He lives in New York City with his wife, their two children, and their dog.
